Portland Bill

The southern most tip of the Isle of Portland, and also the southern-most tip of Dorset, Portland Bill is famous for its lighthouse and the Portland raised beaches.

A true island, connected to the mainland only by a causeway and the shingle ridge of Chesil Beach, Portland is where Portland Stone comes from. Used by Sir Christopher Wren in the building of St. Paul's Cathedral and other buildings in London, this is a most sought after type of rock. Around most of the Island the remains of quarries, and old quarrying technology can be seen.
