Dorchester
County town and administrative centre of Dorset, Dorchester is a place worth visiting. Once a Roman town it is now full of the hustle and bustle of modern life. The market on Wednesday and several High Street shops make it the shopping centre of rural Dorset. There is also the County Museum that has displays on country life, Thomas Hardy and the geology of Dorset, including a fossil track-way. Don't miss the impressive Maiden Castle, a hill fort of the Durotriges tribe that was stormed by the Roman Legions despite its impressive maze of earthworks.
